To The Not Impossible Him
by Edna St. Vincent Millay
by Edna St. Vincent Millay
How shall I know, unless I go
To Cairo and Cathay,
Whether or not this blessed spot
Is blest in every way?
Now it may be, the flower for me
Is this beneath my nose:
How shall I tell, unless I smell
The Carthaginian rose?
The fabric of my faithful love
No power shall dim or ravel
Whilst I stay here, -- but oh, my dear,
If I should ever travel!
{I am headed into a season of travel and I have been reading a beautiful book this week about the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay and in particular I have been thinking about this one poem of hers. There is a brief biography at the beginning of the book that made me love her even more. She had quite a painful childhood, but once when the pipes froze and flooded their kitchen she encouraged her siblings to put on their ice skates and twirl on the frozen disaster. I love that visual!
This is the poem that I have been thinking about the most right now and this line captures my heart - "The fabric of my faithful love, No power shall dim or ravel..." }

gorgeous! i plan on spending a bit of reading time here for sure.
I love this poem, and the fact that I'm alive to still learn about poets and poetry and travel and wonder.
who knew?
Misha - I am enjoying catching up on your blog. How nice to be reacquainted with Edna St. Vincent Millay - a university favourite that I had forgotten about. Thanks for waking me up to poetry again - both yours, and others (and maybe mine, stirring somewhere?)
Yes, yours, Rae! I love that thought! : )
